Financial records are especially complete and are quite detailed until the 1860's. Collection contains a stock purchase and dividend ledger, 1836-1917; incoming correspondence, 1859-1940; memoranda on wages, production, machinery orders, etc., 1869-1879; inventories and statements, 1853-1898, 1933-1935; trial balances, 1856-1931; ledgers, 1830-1935, including one for Spaulding and Collins; journals, 1834-1938, including two for Spaulding and Collins; cashbooks, 1857-1935; and daybooks, 1849-1889. Also contains sales books, 1877-1916; price lists, 1856-1878; payroll totals, 1930-1935; stock inventories, 1902-1911; and a weaving record, 1907-1908. Includes a carpenter's ledger, 1826-1829, which appears to have belonged to a C. Starr; the ledger predates the Russell Manufacturing Co. and includes entries for labor and material used to build a school, church and homes for owners of the company. Also includes a detailed tool inventory. Collection also contains records of Falls Manufacturing Co. of Middletown, including ledgers, 1848-1874, and journals, 1848-1874, with detailed entries including dividends and lists of stockholders.

The company, located in Middletown, Conn., was organized by Samuel Russell in 1834, taking over the mill and machinery started by Spaulding and Collins in 1833. Russell was an innovator in the use of power looms for producing elastic web. It used cotton, jute, silk and India rubber to make belting, boot web, suspenders, and surcingles for horses.
